Addiction Counselling
Victoria BC
Is addiction getting in the way of you enjoying your life?
Addiction takes many forms, including drug and alcohol addiction, gambling addiction, and addiction to video games. Often, addictions begin as a relatively fun or harmless activity, one that increases your enjoyment, or offers relief. Slowly over time it develops into obsession, a loss of self-control, withdrawal symptoms, and health issues. Once this point has been reached, changing alone can be difficult.
Addiction is a complex phenomenon that affects people of all ages and walks of life. In Victoria BC, addiction rates have been steadily rising, as has the risk of overdose. This makes it more important than ever to seek help if you or someone you love are suffering from addiction.
Understanding Addiction
Addiction is primarily a psychological phenomenon. This is why counselling can often be a helpful first point of contact for creating a plan. When physical dependence does occur, it requires medical supervision at a detoxification facility, or rehabilitation centre.
Addiction is fundamentally a result of deep learning and environmental reinforcement. This understanding offers hope as the brain is capable of meaningful change, and environmental changes can be navigated with assistance. Addiction is not a sign of weakness, it is a sign that you are in need of more resources, such as professional help to overcome it.
Benefits of Addiction Counselling
Counselling provides a safe and supportive environment where you can explore the root causes of addiction and develop coping strategies. It can help you rebuild relationships with loved ones and improve your overall quality of life, which reduces the likelihood of relapse.
Addiction counselling can provide many benefits. These include:
Developing a greater understanding of addiction and its root causes
Learning effective coping strategies for managing cravings and triggers
Building a support network of individuals who understand the challenges of addiction
Improving communication skills and relationships with loved ones
Reducing stress and improving overall mental health and wellbeing
Having counselling tailored to the unique needs and circumstances of your life can make the difference between successful therapy, and unsuccessful therapy. I work collaboratively with people to develop a plan that is effective and achievable.
The Process of Addiction Counselling
The process of addiction counselling typically involves several stages. These stages can include:
Assessment: a comprehensive assessment of the addiction and related issues. This assessment may include a review of medical history, a mental health assessment, and an evaluation of any co-occurring disorders. At this point, if a person requires it, referrals will be made to the sobering centre, detox, or a rehabilitation centre.
Counselling: work to address the root causes of addiction and develop effective strategies for managing cravings and triggers. Counselling sessions may include solution-focused therapy, motivational interviewing, and other evidence-based therapies.
Aftercare: once we have addressed your addiction to the point in which you feel like you have enough resources on your own to sustain recovery, we can transition to a bi-weekly, or monthly check-in sessions to reinforce and update your plan. This plan may include participation in support groups, behavioral changes, and other strategies for maintaining sobriety.
